GIARDINI PENELOPE

Around Us

The Giardini Penelope property is located about 30 minutes from Rome, easily reachable by car along the Grande Raccordo Anulare and just a few minutes away from Rome Ciampino airport.

Giardini Penelope is immersed in a countryside area, surrounded by vineyards and crops typical of the Castelli Romani area. Around us, there are small villages with services and larger centers such as Ciampino, Grottaferrata and Marino reached by public transport and trains.

From the area where Giardini Penelope is located, it is possible to easily reach in a few minutes typical villages of the Castelli Romani such as Marino, Rocca di Papa, Ariccia, Nemi, Albano Laziale, Castelgandolfo, Frascati and Genzano di Roma. These are some of the most famous municipalities that are part of the Castelli Romani Park, perfect destinations for a trip out of town.

A walk in the village of Marino is enough to fall in love with characteristic alleys that offer exceptional panoramic views, also being able to buy typical products in the shops of the center. Walking you will come across the Basilica of San Barnaba, the city’s cathedral, and the Fountain of the Four Moors, the symbol of Marino and the protagonist of the famous Marino Grape Festival which attracts tourists from all over Italy every first Sunday in October.

On the slopes of Monte Cavo and within the Castelli Romani Regional Park stands Rocca di Papa, with a height of 680 meters that make it the second highest village in all the Alban Hills. The entire village is built on the ridge of the mountain that culminates in the remains of an imposing fortress that tells an ancient story. Due to its location perched on the mountain overlooking the valley, it is worth a visit to better enjoy the view of the Castelli Romani and the lakes of Nemi and Albano.

The city of Ariccia is famous throughout Italy for the processing of porchetta, the annual appointment with the Porchetta Festival and for the numerous typical fraschette that crowd the town. In addition to its gastronomic heritage, Ariccia is a pearl in terms of architecture and landscape. Churches, monumental bridges and ancient palaces can be visited in the center, without forgetting a stop in the fabulous panoramic terraces and viewpoints over the valley below.

From the Penelope Gardens location you can also easily reach Nemi, which is home to the famous and beautiful lake of the same name. The village dominates Lake Nemi and its historic center has remained almost unchanged since the seventeenth century. In addition to the splendid views of the lake that the town offers, the historic center is worth a visit, full of restaurants, bars and shops selling typical products, including the fabulous wild strawberries of Nemi.

Albano Laziale stands on the slopes of the Alban Hills in the ancient territory that presumably took the name of Alba Longa. The artistic heritage of the town of Albano Laziale is represented by the presence of some singular monuments: the seventeenth-century church of Santa Maria della Stella, the famous Tomb of the Horatii and Curiazi and the catacombs of San Salvatore. Ma la città conserva chiese, anfiteatro, terme, percorsi sotterranei e altri monumenti di grande importanza storica.

But the city preserves churches, amphitheater, baths, underground paths and other monuments of great historical importance.

If you are in the area, a stop at Lake Albano, one of the most well-known and visited places in the Castelli Romani, is a must. It is the fourth largest volcanic basin in Lazio and the deepest at 168 metres. Together with the nearby Lake Nemi, it forms the volcanic complex of the Alban Hills. The shores of the lake, being populated since ancient times, are dotted with archaeological remains and mainly Roman finds. Above the lake is the centre of Castelgandolfo, another town in the Castelli Romani, from which you have a magnificent view of Lake Albano.

In the vicinity of Giardini Penelope lies Frascati, another very important nerve center of the Castelli Romani. In past centuries it was one of the richest areas of the region, which is why it is still home to many villas and sumptuous gardens. The old town is a pleasant mix of historic buildings, charming alleys and churches that can be visited in just a few hours.

Among the many historical attractions to visit are the cathedral of San Pietro, Villa Aldobrandini, the park of Villa Torlonia and the Teatro delle Acque, a work dating back to the first half of the seventeenth century. Tra le numerose attrazioni storiche da visitare spiccano la cattedrale di San Pietro, villa Aldobrandini, il parco di Villa Torlonia e il Teatro delle Acque, opera risalente alla prima metà del Seicento.

Another very famous destination of the Castelli Romani near Giardini Penelope is Genzano di Roma, a town known for the religious tradition of the infiorata which sees the village colored with flower petals that decorate the streets. The historic center of Genzano di Roma brings together all the major points of interest, making a nice walk through the historic village pleasant.
